Altogether shout it now
There's no one
Who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world all about it now
Happy days are here again
Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no more from now on..
The above words are lyrics to the song "Happy Days Are Here Again", theme song to the campaign that brought Franklin Delano Roosevelt into power in 1932. Happy the days were not as FDR led the country back from the Great Depression and through World War Two. Elected to four terms, his sway on the nation and the world still reverberates today. FDR was one of the most influential presidents in American history, perhaps second only to Abraham Lincoln.
He once said "If they are to put up any memorial to me..I should like it to consist of a block about the size of this desk." Not all wishes come true - this is no small memorial, rather a flowing tribute to the man and the rough waters through which he led the country from 1933-45.
Straddling the Tidal Basin in between the MLK and Jefferson Memorials, the FDR Memorial is a must-do on any list of things to see in DC.
